Innovative partnerships and bold looks have long been the domain of straight-size fashion. Priscilla Ono’s new collection with ELOQUII offers both to the plus-size customer, and that’s why this collaboration marks an historic moment. Though beauty and fashion go hand in hand, this is the first time a major plus-size brand has collaborated with a makeup artist to create a collection.
Plus fashion has historically reflected – and perpetuated – the myth that the plus-size customer wants muted looks that primarily minimize and “flatter.” Put plainly, this perfunctory idea stems from the discriminatory belief that fat women want to – and should – hide our bodies. Small, independent companies like Proud Mary Fashion, Rue107, Size Queen and Jibri have long been at the vanguard of risk-taking in the industry, designing swimwear, professional wear, lingerie, and body con looks that are playful, sexy and eye-catching in sizes 1X and up. As the plus-size market continues to grow, I predict we can look forward to seeing more innovative partnerships that push the boundaries of what fashion is and what it can become for the 68% of American women who are a size 14 and above.
The collection blends utilitarian and feminine style, featuring neon, sheer fabrics, and cargo separates. The collection consists of trend-driven, functional pieces detailed with hidden compartments for makeup essentials. The collection also includes The Makeup Holder Belt Bag available in sizes 10-28 and made in a unique, reflective material that creates an aurora borealis effect when photographed using flash.
I spoke with Priscilla and ELOQUII’s Design Director, Yesenia Torres, about what went into creating the collection:
Virgie Tovar: How did this collaboration happen?
Yesenia Torres: Priscilla has been a long-time customer of ELOQUII, so for both of us, this has been a truly organic partnership. Both Priscilla Ono and ELOQUII believe in creating looks that allow our customers and clients to embrace the worlds of fashion and beauty as a means of celebrating confidence and femininity.
Priscilla Ono: We took inspiration from both the vibrancy seen throughout the 90’s and the bold hues shown on the Spring/Summer runway. The ELOQUII customer is both fashion and beauty obsessed, as am I. So we wanted to make sure to design in to this and create an assortment of styles that not only stands out but provides a full look to match her makeup! Even more-we created quite a few pieces that cleverly stores her makeup when she is out and about, namely the Belted Blazer and Glam Pack.
Tovar: How does your background as an MUA show up in this collection?
Ono: It has been such a dream-come-true working with ELOQUII, a brand I’ve been a long-time fan of and that inspires women to be their most confident selves! Merging my experience within the beauty space with ELOQUII’s fit expertise can be seen throughout the collection, from the colors, the pocket details and wearable every day staple pieces. I can’t wait to see how the ELOQUII customer takes each piece and make it her own.
Tovar: What was the design process for the collection like?
Torres: Priscilla’s years of expertise within the beauty industry was so helpful for design as we were able to collaborate on unique pockets & details on each garment specially hand-crafted for palettes, brushes and lipsticks. These details not only make the designs trend-forward, but also practical and functional lifestyle pieces. We’ve combined ELOQUII’s fit expertise and trend-driven approach with Priscilla’s insight and understanding of the beauty customer’s needs and wants.
Tovar: Can you talk about some of the details you love in this collection?
Ono: I wanted to bring women like me a boss collection of fashion-forward styles that allows her to own her power and confidence while also accommodating her hectic schedule with practical detailing. We designed this collection for fashion and beauty enthusiasts who are always on-the-go! I wanted each style to be unique by incorporating special, hidden compartments for beauty essentials including one’s favorite lipstick, compacts and more.
Torres: What I love most about this collection are the bold columns of colors in such unexpected styling. This is a trend we have been starting to see really pop in this year. Each style merges femininity with utilitarian details for a collection that can be incorporated into a variety of wardrobes and occasions.
Tovar: What made you decide to work with a makeup artist on a clothing collection?
Torres: The ELOQUII customer is a fashion and beauty lover who is looking to make a statement everywhere she goes. Partnering with Priscilla, an industry beauty expert, felt like a no-brainer, inspiring us to make a unique collection like this.
Tovar: I noticed the palette of the collection mirrors some of your most iconic looks. Can you tell me about the decision to create the palette for the collection?
Ono: Neon colors are proving to be a standout trend for this Spring season, both in fashion and beauty. Beyond this and professionally, I’ve built my signature style on creating powerful moments through colorful and vibrant expression. This collection was a way to bring all of this to life with fashion-forward, head-to-toe monochromatic styles.
